Countries With the Highest Rates Of HIV/AIDS

According to the CIA World Factbook, these are the countries with the highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS worldwide.

Human Immunodeficiency Virus is a virus that weakens the human immune system leading to AIDS. If detected early, the HIV can be managed to prevent it from progressing to the final stage of AIDS. HIV attacks CD4 cells exposing the infected person to opportunistic infections. Proper diagnosis, treatment, and medical care are essential factors to proper management and control of AIDS which has no cure. While HIV is majorly a sexually transmitted disease, the virus can be transmitted through blood transfusion and during birth or breastfeeding, as well as through a few other means.

Countries With The Highest Rates Of HIV/AIDS

Swaziland

Swaziland has the highest HIV/AIDS infection rates with a total of 27.73% of the population living with HIV/AIDS. Most of the infections in Swaziland are transmitted through low condom use, transactional sex, and sexual violence. Women are most affected by the epidemic with more than 31% reporting an HIV-positive status, compared to 20% in men. High levels of gender violence against women, polygamy, and early marriages to older men contribute to the high rates of infection among women.

Botswana

Botswana has the world’s second largest prevalence rates of HIV/AIDS with 25.16% of the population living with the disease. Female sex workers have the highest rate of HIV infection. As in Swaziland, more of the female adult population is affected by the epidemic compared to the male population. Forced marriages and gender-based violence owing to gender inequalities in the country have both played a significant role. Though Botswana has one of the best mechanisms for dealing with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa, much work remains to be done.

Lesotho

23.39% of the population of Lesotho is infected with HIV/AIDS, making it the third highest rate in the world. Most of the infected persons are members of the disadvantaged groups of the country who have either no voice or are riddled with poverty. Such groups include women, young people aged between 15 and 24 and herd boys who have little access to decent employment, formal education and proper medical care. Control of mother-to-child infections has played a vital role in minimizing the spread of the disease.

South Africa

South Africa has the fourth highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rate with 18.92% of the population living with HIV/AIDS. Lack of education, misguided beliefs about the disease, and sexual violence has contributed to these high rates. Women under the age of 40 are mainly infected, as well as pregnant women. The black population within South Africa has been disproportionately affected.

Efforts Towards Reducing HIV/AIDS Prevalence

Countries with the highest rates of HIV infection have taken several measures towards reducing the rate of infection among the population. Some of these steps include mass education about HIV/AIDS, the introduction of antiretroviral therapy to infected persons, the introduction of gender equality policies to reduce gender inequality and encouraging infected women to take the necessary precautions to prevent mother-to-child transmission. Other countries with high rates of HIV/AIDS prevalence include Zimbabwe, Namibia, Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi, Uganda, Equatorial Guinea, Tanzania, Kenya, Central African Republic, Cote d’Ivoire, Bahamas, Nigeria, Rwanda, Congo, South Sudan, Chad, and Angola.

Effects of HIV/AIDS On The Society

HIV/AIDS has far-reaching effects on the economic, cultural, and social spheres of society. The epidemic has increased mortality rates among the infected persons leading to a decline in the economic productivity of these individuals. High HIV/AIDS prevalence increases the levels of poverty as much of the finances are spent on medication for opportunistic ailment associated with the disease.

83-Year-Old Virgin Finally Ties the Knot to His 90-Year-Old Love

What age were you when you broke your virginity?

An 83-year-old virgin from Uganda called Naomi has decided to get married to a 90-year-old Ugandan man identified as Rwakaikara. That’s right. Naomi has never had sex in her life.

Naomi wedded her new bae at St. James Cathedral in Hoima District area of Uganda. The wedding was presided over by the retired Bishop Nathan Kyamanywa.

The delighted Bishop told the congregation that it was not too late to get married and thanked the couple for patiently waiting for their special day. But the big question is “What was she waiting for?”

Husband and wife.

The man of God praised the couple for challenging the young generation to be holy and focussed.

He also revealed that he had never seen a couple wed at such a late age but it was still a blessing;

It’s my first time since I started work as Bishop to wed an old virgin woman as Naom. This is amazing and the world will read and learn a lot about you.

The husband, Rwakaikara has 10 children, (40 grand children and 59 grand children) from his first (late) wife. Naomi, on the other hand, has never married before. Doctors have confirmed she is indeed still a pure first class virgin.

Nigerian Lady and her mother die in a fatal accident while Shopping for her Wedding

A Chinese-trained medical doctor from Southeast Medical Unniversity, Elizabeth Ihuoma, whose wedding is slated for next week, has passed on.

She died alongside her mother, Julie Adaeze Wagoha, a staff of Rivers Sate University, in a fatal accident in Rivers state this week.

Elizabeth was to get married on the 9th of December, Saturday… She was on her way to the market with her mother to buy some things for her wedding when the accident happened.

The deceased had boarded a bus and were both seated in front. While transiting, the bus tried to overtake a car but then collided with a tanker parked on the road. All passengers except the driver died in the accident.

So heartbreaking! May theIE souls of the deceased rest in peace, Amen.

Man Marries own mother after Impregnating her with Twins

A woman married her own son yesterday. The woman and her son claim to be in love with each other and they decided take their relationship to the next level and get married considering that the mother, Betty Mbereko (from Mwenezi in Masvingo) is now six months pregnant and expecting her son’s twin boys.

Mbereko, 40, has been a widow for the past 12 years and has been living with her 23-years-old son Farai Mbereko.

She confirmed that she is six months pregnant and that she has decided it is better to “marry” her son because she does not want to marry her late husband’s young brothers, whom she says are coveting her.

Betty stunned a village court last week when she said the affair with her son had begun three years earlier.

She said after spending a lot of money sending Farai to school following the death of her husband, she felt she had a right to his money and no other woman was entitled to it.

“Look, I struggled alone to send my son to school and no one helped me. Now you see that my son is working and you accuse me of doing something wrong.

“Let me enjoy the products of my sweat,” she told the village court council.

Farai said he was more than prepared to marry his mother and would pay off the lobola balance his father had left unpaid to his grandparents.

“I know my father died before he finished paying the bride price and I am prepared to pay it off,” he said.

“It is better to publicise what is happening because people should know that I am the one who made my mother pregnant.Otherwise they will accuse her of promiscuity.”

But local headman Nathan Muputirwa says: “We cannot allow this to happen in our village, mashura chaiwo aya, (This is a bad omen indeed). In the past they would have to be killed but today we cannot do it because we are afraid of the police.”

He warned them to immediately break off their marriage or leave his village. They chose the latter and have since left the village for an undisclosed destination.
